About Robert Harris [1849-1919]
Robert Harris was born near Carnarvon, North Wales on September 17th, 1849. He came to Canada, was educated at Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and was for some time a land-surveyor. He was self-educated in art until 1877, after which he studied in London and Paris. He was elected a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1879, and Vice President of the Ontario Society of Artists in 1880. He has exhibited paintings in the Salon of Paris and the Royal Academy of London. Harris’s painting of the meeting of delegates in Quebec that resulted in the formation of the Dominion of Canada was commissioned by the Canadian government in 1883 and now hangs in the parliamentary building. His figurative work is on a par with many of America’s key impressionist painters from the turn of the century.
