Canadian filmmaker Kevin Sullivan created the series after having made the Anne of Green Gables miniseries and its sequel. The story centres on the King family and the town of Avonlea. The series begins when a young girl named Sara Stanley arrives in Avonlea. Her mother died when Sara was very young, and after growing up in Montreal with her wealthy father, she is sent to live with her King relatives. Sara begins a new life in Rose Cottage with her two spinster aunts Olivia and Hetty and discovers a whole new way of living.
Among the 91 episodes there are many uproarious stories that celebrate childhood and imagination and others that deal in a light-hearted way with the serious subjects of birth, childhood, love, old age, and death as experienced by a small North American community during the Edwardian era.
This set includes all seven seasons and is presented in Standard Format (4:3).
In addition to a solid cast of exceptional actors, the episodes are complimented by guest stars, including Ryan Gosling, Stockard Channing, Christopher Lloyd, Dianne Wiest, Treat Williams, Bruce Greenwood, Michael York, Ned Beatty, Madeline Kahn, Peter Coyote, Eugene Levy, Christopher Reeve, Meg Tilly, Gordon Pinsent, and Faye Dunaway.
